How quick weight loss diets may put your health at risk

Quick weight loss plans and fad diets are an unreasonable alternative to permanent healthy eating habits, according to the American Heart Association. What is a fad diet? It’s a well marketed diet with some crazy scheme to lose weight in an impossible manner, often by just eating one food like a cabbage. One food or one type of food is generally overemphasized with fad quick weight loss diets. They don’t include much variety or a healthy balance, a violation of the first principle of good nutrition, eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. Because no one food has all the nutrients required for good health, these diets can result in a lot of health problems. One example is the Cabbage Soup Diet. The myth of this diet is that cabbage soup is some sort of fat dissolving potion. People supposedly lost 10-17 pounds in only one week, eating primarily cabbage soup. Even if the weight loss claim were true, all the damage due to a lack of a host of important nutrients would far outweigh (pun intended) the benefits of losing the weight. There are no magic beans, or magic cabbages, or miracle foods when it comes to weight loss and good nutrition. Moderation in eating all the major food groups is the way to go. The second principle of good nutrition is that eating should be enjoyable. You think eating only cabbages every day is enjoyable? It’s impossible to stay on these diets for a long time because they’re so monotonous. Consider a week on the Cabbage Soup Diet. By Wednesday you’d dread meal time, and by Friday you’d never again want to hear about a cabbage let alone eat the soup. They would probably have to cart you off in a straight jacket by Sunday. There are many more ways quick weight loss diets aren’t good ones to do. Most don’t talk about exercise, such as aerobics for 30 minutes a day every day. Physical activity helps maintain weight loss, while physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke. When you hear of a diet that mentions “no need to workout” run to the hills, or at least run on a treadmill. Quick weight loss is a very real possibility. Just don’t fall for those tricks or gimmicks that might end up destroying your health in the process.
